A fresh update from Whitireia where the Aotearoa Creative Textiles action is still hot! Above is a picture of one of the two small quad's that sit side by side with our classroom in the middle of them!
This is an exciting week, I came with a notebook of ideas and have been working my way towards a design. Jae Maries, our tutor, has been a tremendous help, giving us demonstrations of some construction and creation methods then allowing us to explore our territory in our own way. My idea has been the concept of an idea within something, like a pearl inside an oyster, a conflict making beauty, a thought within a human being. Jae's demonstration of pva and polyfiller applied to calico to make a structure provided my inspiration.
My structure in a basic triangle with a curved minaret top that forms a triangle - triangular things are less likely to fall over so I reasoned this was a good way forward. The stark white was meant to incorporate Jea's ideas of Contrast. The white is unmarked, clean and textured and the red is meant to to provide the conflict, the idea, the agitation. There is meant to be something inside that to represent the concept of 'the idea'. This is So much fun and SO exciting.
The other thing I have been enjoying about this week is the idea of a working on book with a page each day. I used pieces from my table, things we had worked with, patches of fabric, whatever. It was a fun way to work and I am encouraged to try doing more of these.
