Farewell Bush House - A Video Tribute

This is a lovely little video. I passed Bush House often when I lived in London, never been in.  I am so sorry the BBC are leaving.  I assume some ghastly company might grab it......

Working with Photoshop

OK after a near disaster that involved my hard disc failing, having to reload my software one iteration back (Leopard) and while I wait for a replacement Snow Leopard disc (mine is damaged), I am starting to take a look at Photoshop CS3 and Illustrator.  Here are my first steps.

Where does a beginner start?

I am a believer in preparation and 'looking things up', so found a couple of magazines helpful;  Practical Photoshop and Digital Editing Skills (from Practical Photography).  My third element is 'Teach Yourself Photoshop' iPad app which is available via the App Store on iTunes.

Learning tools I have started with

'Practical Photoshop' (Future Publishing) covers the basics for beginners in their Essentials section at the back and each issue comes with a dvd so you can work along with some of the projects and see how things are done.   It had Creative Tips on how to get the best from a particular feature in this huge program.  There is a Portfolio Surgery discussing the work of talented folk further up the skill ladder and reviews of the best Photoshop kit available.

Each issue is packed with so many things it will keep you busy all month and it is the one magazine I always look for.

Digital Editing Skills is a 'Bookazine' %-) basically because it does what a book does in magazine format.  It is focused on Photoshop (and Elements) and digital photography so it gives a slightly different but still useful view of the program.  Again, it has a DVD with projects but the crucial difference is that this is structured as a course, not a browsing magazine.

In this course you learn valuable information in the most useful way and it begins with that most crucial of elements, the workflow.  After that Basics, Contract & Exposure, Colour Control, Layers, Selections and retouching are all covered with an homework project so you are challenged to learn and remember each skill.  For anyone starting in digital photograpy this is a very good place to start.

Teach Yourself Photoshop

This is a 10 part structured video course working through Photoshop Elements initially but moving into Photoshop proper for some work.  It is not cheap but there are ten 'lessons' each divided into chapters of video that are clearly spoken and are clear to follow on the iPad screen and a lot of information.

The advantage is you can replay the lessons you need more help and information with at any time and seeing someone do something is always much better than trying it with a book beside you.  If you have the space cash it is worth the investment.  I can't link to Teach Yourself Photoshop but please take a look - disregard the whingeing reviews saying it "doesn't do Photoshop" it covers both in general ways.

I hope to be back with my first Photoshop Adventures very soon.

Photoshop and illustrator

I am starting some serious Photoshop and Illustrator learning this week.  I want to share my discoveries as a beginner in these complex and exciting programs.

I am going to add my posts to a blog over on Wordpress as a way of learning that at the same time too.   When it is all set up I will post the linky here!  I am deciding whether the free simple blog is the way to go for now or whether I should jump in and pay for the easier route!
